Beer 10: Warsteiner Pils

Beer: Warsteiner is a Pilsener from Germany and is available in 60 countries around the world. Beer is a light beer with a very fresh taste, perfect with lunch or just hanging out with friends

Brewery: The Warsteiner Brewery was founded in 1753, and today is one of the largest privately held breweries in Germany. Its flagship is the Warsteiner brand, one of Germany’s leading premium pilsener brands.

Strength: 4.8% ABV

Beer 09: La Trappe Dubbel

Beer: La Trappe Dubbel has a deep brown colour and attractive beige froth. The use of caramel malt gives it a gentle aromatic caramelised quality. It has a rich malty flavour with a touch of sweetness. Post-fermenting La Trappe Dubbel is a smooth drink, and yet has some real body and intense flavour to it. One of my go-to beer depending on my mood

Brewery:

The Koningshoeven Brewery is one of the few Trappist breweries in the world authorised to use the ‘Authentic Trappist Product’ logo. Because ale can only be called Trappist ale when it has been brewed between the four walls of a Trappist monastery, under the supervision of the monastery’s monks, and when part of the proceeds is earmarked for charity. Pure and honest. And that’s reflected in the taste.

A “Trappist” has to satisfy a number of strict criteria proper to this logo before it may bear this name:

  1. The beer must be brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery, either by the monks themselves or under their supervision.
  2. The brewery must be of secondary importance within the monastery and it should witness to the business practices proper to a monastic way of life
  3. The brewery is not intended to be a profit-making venture.  The income covers the living expenses of the monks and the maintenance of the buildings and grounds.  Whatever remains is donated to charity for social work and to help persons in need.

Beer 07: Gulpener Gladiator

Beer: Third beer from Gulpener Brewery among 7 so far is to say something about the beers from the brewery. Gulpener Gladiator is a beer you drink less of to get knocked out fast cos it has a strength of 10% hence ideal for parties and not for enjoying alone

Beer: Brand Weizen is a wheat beer from the brewery Brand which is brewed in  Limburg according to traditional Bavarian recipe.

Beer 05: Maredsous Triple

Beer: Maredsous triple is one of those that can hide their truly awesome character in a seemingly simple attire. Bottled to look like a Duvel beer but has a character and taste that is so unlike a Duvel. Stronger than a Duvel but without its bitter taste

Brewery: Maredsous Abbey is a 19th Century benedictine monastery which makes cheese and cups to be self sufficient along with Beer brewing

Review: Simply delicious as it has lightness of a lager without the bitter accompanied by higher strength than a lager

Beer 04: Hoegaarden White

Beer: Hoegaarden White has been a long term favorite of mine as it is enjoyable any time of the day or year making it a perfect companion

Brewery: First Brewed in the village Hoegaarden in 1445, the tradition almost died in 1950s and was since revived by Pierre Celis and later by InBev, continues to be the most popular Wheat Beer in Belgium

Beer 02: Brand DubbelBock

Beer: Brand Doublebock is brewed by the Brand Brewery  which is a Dutch brewery founded in 1871 by the Brand family in Wijlre. The name comes from the Brand family which in 1871 purchased the Netherlands oldest brewery (1340) and remained in management after its acquisition by Heineken.

Strength: 7.5% ABV

Bock is a strong lager of German origin. Several substyles exist, including maibock (helles bock, heller bock), a paler, more hopped version generally made for consumption at spring festivals; doppelbock(double bock), a stronger and maltier version; and eisbock, a much stronger version made by partially freezing the beer and removing the ice that forms.

Doppelbock or double bock is a stronger version of traditional bock that was first brewed in Munich by the Paulaner Friars, a Franciscan order founded by St. Francis of Paula Historically, doppelbock was high in alcohol and sweet, thus serving as “liquid bread” for the Friars during times of fasting, when solid food was not permitted. Today, doppelbock is still strong—ranging from 7%–12% or more by volume. It is clear, with colour ranging from dark gold, for the paler version, to dark brown with ruby highlights for darker version. It has a large, creamy, persistent head (although head retention may be impaired by alcohol in the stronger versions). The aroma is intensely malty, with some toasty notes, and possibly some alcohol presence as well; darker versions may have a chocolate-like or fruity aroma. The flavour is very rich and malty, with toasty notes and noticeable alcoholic strength, and little or no detectable hops (. Paler versions may have a drier finish. The monks who originally brewed doppelbock named their beer “Salvator” (“Savior”), which today is trademarked by Paulaner.

Review: Beer 01 is not dethroned but still a really good beer in its own right. Light, Slightly sweet and enjoyed on a cold evening near a fireplace

2016: Project 52

A significant percentage of people begin the new year with resolutions, of which some are vague like get healthy and some are precise like make a million dollars. Some succeed, most fail.

Like most, I have a resolution or rather a project, to taste and test 52 brands or types of beers codenamed Project 52. When I try a new one, i will post about details of brewer, beer and some history where I can find. Here’s to hoping I succeed. Cheers
